This is a Dore Westbury Mk1 vertical milling machine, fitted with power feed to the X axis of the table. It is powered by a single phase 250W 1420 RPM motor. Incindentally, this is very similar to the arrangement on my DoreWestbury mill. The only difference is that an oring is used instead of a spring washer. HTH Mike. Yeh, the Dore Westbury is indeed a unique mill, not least as it was originally sold in kit form, which comprised a set of plans, a book containing all the machining procedures and notes, a set of partly machined castings and all the materials to make the various levers and such.
'Dore' is Arnold Throp and he was/is a part of Model Engineer Services of Sheffield. Ivan Law and the Quorn/ Dore Westbury/Kennet et al. The next clue is that Throp is/was a member of the SMEE. I nattered with him on the stand at Harrogate a couple of years ago. Hope this helps( and unless someone can do better they can belt up)

The instructions specify 0 to 360 rpm, but a brief high speed test on the Dore Westbury got it reading up to 3450 rpm, so the instructions should probably say 0 to 3600. The Halfords computer can now go on my pushbike to encourage harder pedalling as I go out to buy The Times after breakfast.

I built my Dore Westbury mill from a kit of parts in the early eighties,the largest cutter that i used was a 3/4 inch end mill. In ordinary mild steel it would cut at least 1/16 inch deep and more on occasions .I still have it although it is now a cnc machine. The head lives on with an Axminster table and is still a useful
